Default Northern Lights in Tromso

Just returned from 4 days in Tromso in the North of Norway. On our first night we were treated to a spectacular display of the northern lights, absolutely stunning, brought tears to my eyes it was so beautiful. We weren't in the best spot for photography (some power lines in the way, trees blocking some views, no lake or clean horizon for the image) but we weren't in the worst spot either (out of town, some tents for some foreground interest).

Anyway, here's some of my faves, what do you think?

These were all taken with a 30 second exposure on f/4.0 with ISO 400.

Thank you. I know where the center is but have never visited it. I live 8 min. away from it.
I mostly drive to get away from the city lights. So I mostly ends up in some of the fjords or at Sommarøya.
I also checked out your pictures and you really have a great collection.

Next time you should consider to visit Spitsbergen/Longyearbyen, preferably in the summertime. I have been there at work so I didn't bring my camera nor did I have time for a sightseeing.

Hi Simon, great set of shots - I remember when I saw them in Iceland even with all the aurora forecasts that I had been observing weeks in advance it really is pot luck as to whether you see them or not. Could you give me some more details about where you stayed and where you would recommend as a good backdrop (I had a read on your blog and was just looking for more details). I think I may plan something for this time 09. Thanks.

Hey Futura,

I stayed at the Raddisson in Tromso, really nice hotel in a great central location at a reasonable price. You obviously want to get as far away from town as possible to shoot the lights, however as we went over Christmas a lot of the tours and guys who take you out were closed so we were pretty much at the mercy of what tours were operating. There's a guy we wanted to book who's a photographer and "chases" the lights and gets you in the best place to shoot them, but he was closed for our trip. I think he charged around £100 for 6 or 7 hours, the tour we took to the Tromso Wilderness Centre was about £45 for 4 hours and was the cheapest available.

Here's the website of the tour we didn't do http://www.kskogli.no/aurora/

I am in awe. Love the foregrounds you worked in.

#2 deserves a very large frame, beautiful image.
