Default HELP! My Rebel is out of control!

Ok, I have a serious problem with my Digital Rebel right now. I was going to shoot thursday, when my shutter would stick! It would only allow half of the censor to expose! The other half was all back! I was like "ok"? so I put new batteries in, problem went away. So I thought! Now the Autofocus wont work! Ive tried 5 different lenses, all keep searching like mad! And to make it worse, the autofocus came back, yet the shutter problem returned again! Anyone know of this problem? Is it minor, or do I have something larger on my hands? This rebel is about 7 months old, 16 000 shots on it.

Thanks for your help!

A frustrated Andrew C

Sounds to me like the Rebel needs to visit the nearest service center

At first you said 7 months 16,000 shots

Btw, offtopic a tad here since I can't help you, how do you know how many shot's you've taken? Is there any type of counter anywhere or are you just estimating? Would be nice to have a way of knowing

Ditto. Rebel shutter is designed with about 10K in mind. So it's probable that the shutter just keeled over.

When I had mine the same exact thing happened to it. I had to send it in for repair. If you take off the lens when it is giving you half black images and open the shutter you will notice that the secondary mirror (used for autofocus) is hanging down below the primary mirror. It blocks half the sensor and hence the half black images. If you close it manually or if it manages to close, it will fail to open again thereby disabling autofocus. The bottom line is it has to go to repair, sorry.

Only 10,000?

That's not alot D: At about 27 pictures a day your shutter would be broken in a year. It makes me not want to pick up the cam and take shots for no reason because I'm bored..heh.

I thought I read somewhere it was 50,000 for the rebel XT.

Let me pluck another possibility out of thin air.

You aren't trying to test it with flash on and a shutter speed set too high, are you? That will give you an image that is part black and part lit.

It is just a thought. If you are shooting normal scenes without flash, then disregard.

So I was told by reputable people on this forum.

Usually the rebel shutters last to 30-50K though. But that's a reasong to get that 1 series body.

No kidding. But then... it breaks at usually more than 10K... let's say 20 on average.

And costs 200 bucks to replace. So each picture is a cent... Plus four cents for the camera cost.

Each shutter actuation costs you 5 cents. And that's without the cost of the lens.

Upon inspection, yes the mirror is dangling. Was this covered under warranty, or am I in for a big hit?

Yes it was covered under warranty. I was without the camera for a month.

Ok, thanks for helping me out! Hopefully it wont be gone too long, I drove up to Mississauga today and dropped it off. Going to pick it up too when its ready, will most likely save a week of waiting for it in the mail .
