Default water lilly

just getting used to PS - any thoughts on this - taken at Kew Gardens, natural light. Slight tweaking on levels

Yep Timmy, I can see it, and I like it ... the high contrast really makes them stand out, and the subtle green is enough to stop the background form being too plain

Maybe I ought to finally visit Kew myself.

Great subject matter. For my personal liking, I think direct light from the flash de-flatters a otherwise flattering subject matter. Maybe some side lighting and shooting without flash could soften it up a bit. Just my $.02!

I'd consider cropping off the left and right ... you're using a lot pixels with no content that don't add to the composition. And attaching the image versus having it linked into the note restricts the filesize and makes it difficult to evaluate images in which the detail, such as flower petals, is essential.

no - natural light (but its in a glasshouse so pretty bright

I didn't think so, I just wanted to be sure. Maybe later someone else will suggest you use fill flash...

Seriously, it is a great pic, and I'd be disappointed if you cropped it. I'm not sure I understand the trend to fill every available pixel with color.
