Default 5D MkII Image Stabilisation Problem

I was using the camera today when I noticed the IS didn't appear to be coming on.

Thinking the lens was perhaps faulty (yes IS was switched on), I stuck another IS lens on and sure enough the IS didn't switch on when I focused & half pressed the shutter button.

I've tried all 4 of my IS lenses and none of the IS works. I put the lenses on my 20D and IS works on all the lenses so it is obviously the 5D MkII.

I've only had the 5D MkII a couple of weeks so not used to all the settings. Have I missed something in the settings somewhere or does it sound like a camera fault. I've reset my menu settings to default with no improvement.

I was going to tell you to look about the custom function where the camera disables AF if focus cannot be achieved, but since you've reset everything back to default, it sounds like your camera needs to go back. About the only other thing I could advise would be to take the eraser of a pencil and clean the contacts on the body mount.

Are you sure? I know that my IS on 70-200/2.8L IS while mounted my 30D is more loud than while mounted on my 40D. So maybe it's just more quiet on the new 5D Mk II?

How would the IS system be louder on one body than another?

Yes I'm sure. It was working fine a few days ago, you can hear it & you can see it kicking in, only it doesn't any more. Tried it on 24-105, 70-200, 100-400 & 600, works & sounds on the 20d, nothing on the 5D.

How does it sound on your 5D MkII, (I'm guessing it's not silent)

Don't ask me, that's just how it is. I was pretty worried that my IS was going down hill when I asked some questions about it on another forum and a member told me that the IS do make different sounds on different bodies. I checked it more closely (i.e. I did listen and was aware) and sure enough, it was a difference.

OK, so you notice that there's also camera shake? Then it sounds like something isn't right.

If you shoot a video w/ your IS on the onboard mic will pick it up and you should here it working in the playback.

The easiest way to check if IS works is to go to live view, zoom in to 10x, then start the IS by focusing or pressing the shutter halfway. It should be deadly obvious if it's on or not.

Reboot the camera by removing main and clock batteries. I had this issue with a 40D once- no IS or AF. Rebooted and it all came back to life.

Tried the rebooting by removing both batteries - no difference.
