Default POTN G-series Speed Challenge #208 - Your first commercial gig...

Challenge #208 - Your first commercial gig...

Congratulations a major manufacturer (of your choosing) has been monitoring these challenges for several weeks and they simply love your work. They want you!

So here’s the deal…they want you to do a photo layout of their product in a new ad campaign. Your photo will be running in all the major magazines, so don’t mess it up. There is naturally a tight deadline and you only get this one chance. This company you’ll be shooting for is cutting edge, they demand only the best and they want their product presented in an imaginative way. Think out of the box.

What an interesting selection of products you folks selected. I was sort of expecting tomato soup cans, watches, cars, and male enhancement type products. Oh well…

So here’s how I think the entries stacked up for this challenge:

Maureen Souza – The challenge was pitched to the plate and you were the first to step up to the plate and take a swing. Crack!!! Out of the park that ball flew. Really good entry…the young lady really looks to be enjoying her “Quiet Time”. Then again, who wouldn’t, what with some warm Baileys coursing through the veins (Wish I had some for this judging.). So you found a willing model to participate? Lucky you…my family members have to be paid off at a super model’s rate.
I think a bit of softening of the bottle’s image on the mug would have helped marry it better to the mug. But otherwise I thought this was an excellent entry and something you would find in so many popular magazines.

Michael Wells - First in the Canon mindset, your photo does the camera proud, capturing the intent of the product. Terrific idea creating a background montage of photos this camera is capable of taking. What no photo of the “bent”? Frankly I was shocked. I see you were on to me…fixing the photo as you did. I was already to comment about the camera not fitting within the frame and you solved that. A shrewd advertising man you are.

Boutty – Market vs. color saturation…good idea to take a new and different slant. I was thinking as this challenge progressed, everyone had Canon on the brain. I mean, of course we do, but who wants to admit to it?

Happy New Year indeed! Clever design and with a somewhat 3-D effect yet; it seems like the animal is actually lunging at us. I know how I’d start celebrating the year if I were there, taking that photo. I’d be running away, is what I’d be doing. And that’s no bull shi….umm, forgot myself there for a second. Sorry.

It might have been fun to add some additional teaser lines to the cover much like the magazine does, It seems a bit blank without them. As a thought, how about, “P.O.T.N., fosters Ansel Adams posers…”, that sort of thing. Certainly is a strong entry.

echomusiq – The truth here…what became of the bird? I know peacocks can be a particularly troublesome animal what with their piercing cries and all, but to run it over with a locomotive That seems a bit excessive, don’t you think?

I could certainly see a layout like this working for advertising the camera, but I think companies generally want to avoid suggesting that some poor defenseless animal is about to be um….1863’d. Looking past that, because I know this wasn’t your intent, I do like the composition and how you married the two objects ( bird and camera) together using the viewfinder. I wonder what Mr. Canon would think? Good job and welcome to these challenges.

Marie – Now that’s just not fair. You somehow found out my passion of chocolate and now you exploit it. Have you no shame?

I’ve got mixed feeling about this shot. I like the background and its mottled look, but the glass and particularly the chocolate itself (Never mess with the goods.) just doesn’t grab me. Composition is very good but the product isn’t enticing this viewer, as much as I want it to be.

Would you happen to have any chocolate left?

rpolitzer – I’m not sure I read the same publications as you do. And to think you come across so mild-mannered. Have you given any thought to taking up Yoga?

This is really a good photo. Sharp…imaginative…with just the proper hint of medieval goth. The print is spot on. The kid in me wants to play. Question: does the broken glass come with the figurines? Fun stuff.

Ahobden – Rickenbacker…don’tcha just love the name itself? I think Beatles when I see these guitars (I know, we’re talking bass here.). I like the direction you were heading, but there are a couple things that just didn’t pluck my string. I think a little pp should have been used to clean up the small scuff on the edge of the head and while at it, I would have tried to smooth out the edge’s highlight reflection so that it appeared more even. I would want the head to look absolutely smooth and flawless. Also, I think you should have included a version of your title in the photo instead of “Made in U.S.A.” I would have also sexed-up the print too. Still, I like your concept and product.

Randall – I liked your move, and though I have never seen chess pieces advertised, your photo does it in a class act. Or glass act? Whatever…

How can I do this delicately? That was an interesting “choice” in your slogan. Does Photoshop even offer spell check, anyone? Regardless, it’s a very cool photo, very sleek and I can see that it would attract the enthusiast any knight of the week. Very Cool.

GrumblyMermaid - now you can see why sizing these photos can be such a headache. Folks this entry was posted with some difficulty and I did contact Grumbly to try to get the photo resized properly before judgment. I believe this person also sought the help of others so I’m willing to cut the person a break, hey, nobody deserves a headache, and so I’m considering it for judgment. I hope all of you understand.

I’m not sure Advil can even remedy that character’s problem, but the ad is clever, funny, and…and…erotic, maybe? This was out of the box, the advertisement I was looking for.

Before I pass sentence (Being a judge isn’t everything its cracked up to be. ), I want to thank you all for joining in the fun. I have a feeling this contest wasn’t as fun for people as I had hoped. I had two ideas for this challenge and I promise, if given an opportunity again, I’ll use the other, much better one. Bodypaint!

1st place: GrumblyMermaid – When you have a headache THIS big

2nd place: rpolitzr – little mightly warriors

3rd place: echomusiq – Canon Pro Photos Made Easy
