Fruit Splash In Liquid

I see this alot and love it. Its so awesome I know its over done but what I am asking is how would I go about doing this with the black back ground a nice martini glass and drop some kind of fruit in it.

Could someone send me a diagram of how to set these shots up I own a 40D and a 580exII flash do I need to have off camera capabilities or can you do it on camera?

Sorry if this is confusing but these shots really interest me thanks.
