Default what mode to shot in with my 5d at a Autoshow

This is probably a stupid question but from experience but what mode should I shoot at a car autoshow? I use to shoot in manual exclusively on my 400d but since i have a 5d I feel the need to shoot in AV Tv, and P mode most of the time

Glad you asked! I just got back from a car show (my car was in it!) and experimented with a new style of shooting (for me). What I suggest you do with your 5D is to raise the ISO fairly high - ISO 1600 or higher - and use a Canon flash on ETTL for fill-in. Normally I use a much lower ISO (400 or so) and just live with a darker-than-I-want background. I tried the newer, high-ISO style and was very pleased. It's the low-noise feature of the 5D that makes this possible...

I've added a blurred photo to show the flash fill method I'm talking about. Unlike my typical advice, I found that the E-TTL setting of 0:EVALUATIVE made better photos than 1:AVERAGE.

I don't understand... why don't you continue to use manual mode?

sorry my post was sort of confusing even for me

I guess a good answer would be I never given the other modes a try and just learned that a lot of people actually use those modes...

I will be experimenting this week at the Chicago AutoShow

Manual for me. Especially with the lights glaring off the chrome & paint.
Need an exposure crutch?
