I would like to know this too.. I'm sure it has something to do with the "Bulb" feature, but I'm not sure what..
I have an XSi |

Yes, using "bulb" mode will allow you to take exposures as long as your sky conditions will allow and your battery will last. For most people light pollution will be the biggest obstacle. Thermal noise will also become more visible as the camera heats up. Best to keep the ISO down and shoot in cool temps if possible.
You'll want to use a shutter release cable to trip and end the exposures.

yes you need a shutter release cable.. OR you could just take a bunch of 30" exposures... and then put them all together..

For a bit (quite a bit admittedly) The TC80N3 timer remote is great for astro work as you can programme it to take say 30 number 2 minute exposures with a 30 second delay between each. I still tend to use it if I am imaging with a DSLR rather than a CCD as it works so well and is much simpler than tethering to a laptop.

If you are taking 1 hour exposures you better make sure your skies are dark otherwise your frame will wash out. Many of us cannot take 5 minute exposures because the frame washes out. Also look into a ACK -E2 so you can plug your camera into the wall outlet cause there is a good chance your battery will be dead.
The TC80N3 is very nice to have. |

I'm of a similar breed to you then Chris, though I'm more a "Sit infront of the telly with a cup of tea and a piece of cake, laptop by my side controlling the imaging camera and guiding camera, allowing me to view the images as they're taken."

Really??
I have had two. One of my old 350d and now for my 40d. Both work great and never had a single problem. Could just be a bad batch perhaps?? |
