I took my Canon G2 out tonight to try some night photography.
It works pretty well, but I noticed a single red pixel in the top right hand corner of EVERY night scene! It's in the exact same spot, so I'm wondering if this means I have a burned out pixel in the CCD. The camera is barely 3 months old, so it's still under warranty. Nonetheless if this is what I can expect from digital photography in general, and Canon in particular, I may just sell the G2 on EBAY and go back to my Nikon 8008S.... You can take a look at the promlem here: http://www.artsci.wustl.edu/~rrosener/badpixel.html Thanks! Russ |

You have a “hot pixel”. I have read that this is common for all brands of digital cameras. I had one too on my first G2, and exchanged the camera soon after I discovered it (digital cameras are one of the ONLY types of products for which I’ll consider an extended warrantee/service contract). However I also made a script for Corel PhotoPaint that would virtually remove it from any picture using the dust/scratch filter, as it was in the same location on every shot. So I could have probably gotten by with not replacing the camera, but since I paid extra for the contract I exchanged it.

Thanks for the info. I emailed canon usa's web tech support, but have been stonewalled by automated help messages that say nothing useful whatsoever. I guess I'll be calling them and trying to find out what can be done. It seems that I can use Photoshop to clone the pixel out, but it makes no sense that a 3 month old camera should have such a defect. Maybe you've got a point about the extended warranty!

Actually when I noticed the hot pixel in my first G2, it was about 3 months after I bought it (and several hundred pictures). Then I went back and looked at some of the very first pictures again. Sure enough it had been in there from the very beginning. So in my case the defect was in there from the very start and did not develop over time.

I juz took another shot with my cam and realize the supposedly dead pixel is not there.
Does that mean that the pixel i originally notice is a hot pixel ? Does hot pixel appears after operating CCD for extended period of time ? |

Well I did some research about the "hot" pixel, which may be different than an actual "dead" pixel. I checked mine and it is red and only shows up on long night exposures. it's not on the daylight or strobe shots I have done.
Check this very informative web site for a technical description of the "hot pixel" issue: http://www.imaging-resource.com/ARTS/HOT/HOT.HTM I suppose it's just something one has to live with in digital imaging. It's really odd that nowhere is this quirk mentioned. With all of the press digital cameras have generated, you'd think that Canon, or Nikon, or Olympus would put a disclaimer in the instruction manual explaining hot pixels. I guess once "you pays your money; you takes your chances...." |
