You should've gotten bats from a 3rd party like sterlingtek.com and used the money you saved to buy something else... but oh well, drunken orders are allowed

$12 at sterlingtek and the quality's very good in my experience. You can either call up and cancel that part of the order, or just know for next time.

Never go to Ebay with a couple of beers under your belt either. Everything seems like a bargain.

Sounds like you ought to be doing your drinking far away from your computer, like at a friend's house or the bar. Too risky on the wallet, otherwise.

You did the right thing buying a Canon battery. If you read the warranty, it is void if you use anything else. Why risk a warranty for $40?

Actually, I would guess that there are more non-Canon batteries in use than Canon branded. The warranty is not void for using a non-Canon battery. However, if you have a non-Canon battery that blows up big time and damages the camera, the warranty would be void.
Personally, I have used only about six such batteries in my Canon experience, and I have never heard of a battery damaging the camera. It would, however, be possible. Rare, probably. ---Bob Gross--- |

Of course, if you had any sense, you would pry out the Brand X battery and stick in a proper Canon battery before you sent it in. ---Bob Gross--- |

But if you need a few spares, like an extra 3 or 5 for example that $40 becomes a lot more. I have actually found that using the right brand-x battery also offers longer life - I've had 2 bp511's go bad (won't hold chage) but none of my brand-x have yet to fail.

According to the March/April PCPhoto, you need to condition Li-ion & NiMH batteries with THREE full charge to discharge cycles before the first partial discharge/charge use.
Also keep in mind that, at best, these batteries only have a few years of life before they die, so why pay the premium? I don't know, but I suspect that Canon only makes the nameplate (if that) for their batteries. They make the sensors & the lenses, & that's good enough for me.
