looks like the sun is providing light from slightly behind the model (and to the left).

catch light shows there might be a light source (softboxed flash) coming from camera right.

that's my guess!

unless you're putting the 580ex OCF by the means of a off camera shoe cord which i believe still maintains ETTL functionality.
I realize my trigger won't support ettl. I'm just saying that using ettle between 2 580's via the built in wireless system, my results are inconsistent compared to using them in manual mode. When using ettle I find that One shot my skin tones will be a little blown and the next shot they'll be o.k or even a little dark. I am curious to know if other people are having the same experience or maybe I just need a little more practice.

I took this with all the lights on in the house....2 AB800 and the small flash is a 580exII. The B's had Radiopopper jr studios and the 580 had the PX
I fired them all with the PX mounted on another 580 on camera. HSS was on and shutter speed was at 4000. As you can see HSS worked and killed all the light with the high shutter speed.

Nice shot tim. mind explaining a little more, maybe how you choose your settings, were you firing your 580s in manual or ettl?

thanks.

Rodddy...thank you very much. I like to shoot Av and ETTL. I'll make any exposure adjustments as needed. Most of my on-location portraits are done with this simple one light set up.

This is one of favorites from a recent shoot in the family's own backyard. The setting sun (camera right) lit the dad and baby girl, but the boy was in complete shade because of a tree, so I set up my light stand and shoot-thru umbrella (camera right).

Slicer, thats awesome!! Do you seem to get a descent amount of power with shutter speeds around 1/1000th? and maybe an aperture of about F4 or so? Do you think you could do another test with some settings like those? IT would be really helpful.

you almost have it..

check out this post and image #4 that is where the light is coming from..

http://photography-on-the.net/forum/...d.php?t=777606

then all i did was balance out for the ambient and left the light where it was from image #4 and took this shot i posted in this thread..

so the front lighting on the shot you reversed engineered was the sun, and the side kicker was the flash unit..

so i am learning to use light from everywhere.. once i set the stand, i try to cover as many angles as i can with out moving things too much and in this case it worked out that i can take two images by use the same light source. you had it right, but it was 180 degrees reversed..
