outdoor horse show

My daughter is in her first horse show this weekend (outdoor). I am comfortable with settings, but have no idea what a good horse show picture looks like, contains, etc. What elements do I need to include? Does anyone have pictures or suggestions on where to look for good examples?

I will try and get some more links for you but I am at a farm shoot all day today. Is your daughter showing tomorrow or Sunday. If Sunday I will try and get some links of equine photogs that I respect.

Equine photography is unique in that it is mainly sports photograpy, and so you need to follow those rules, but it has some portrait rules thrown in! You need to use high shutter speed to stop action but also have to be able to identify the rider. You are shooting outside so high shutter speed should not be a problem. Up the ISO up enough to at least get 1/1000. Then make sure you open up enough to blur action. If necessary overexposure slightly so the shadow under the hat is opened up so you can see her face. Try and catch any action at it's peak. As an example if she is jumping catch her at the peak of the jump.

This is a site I found that I was going to maybe sign up for a class or two, the classes are cheap enough... so what the heck.

What kind of horse show? If Western, see if you can go to the center of the ring . . .sometimes the smaller shows the judge will let you. Try to anticipate your shot.
We do barrel racing, so it's going to be my first season trying to capture some great shots. Location is key to get the angles.

My daughter says she does English riding... I am not a horse guy so I don't know what either of those things mean... This will be my first horse show so I will know more after tomorrow. I just to get some good shots since this is her first time...

You should have some fun with this subject. I've found it to be one of the most challenging/rewarding I have encountered.

We only shoot outdoors for the simple reason that indoor lighting is positivly terrible in all situations.

Keep in mind that the subject is moving in 3 different planes....forward/back (legs), up/down (head, neck,rider) and sweeping around arena corners. Basic subject size is approx. 8ft tall, by 81/2ft. in length, by 3ft thick. ......Dimensions change quickly with the gait chosen, so sharpen up your geometry skills and learn to pan !

For a jump imo this is what looks good, bear in mind the rider wasnt happy as the Horse was overjumping but you get the idea.
