Default used Nikon SB-26 or used Sigma 500DG Super with sony/minolta foot?

if both cost the same and in comparable condition, which would you pick for off-camera lighting?

NIkon. Not only is it a better flash, you need adapters for the sony foot.

can the sb-26 be used on the XSi's hot shoe in manual mode without worries of frying anything?

just got the 3 sb26's in the mail. they are built much better than the sigma and feels every bit as solid as the 580EX II that i just sold. I basically "traded" a 580EX II for 3 SB-26s.

i mounted it on camera, and using auto mode, it works just fine. however i have one question, is it possible to get the AF assist lamp to turn on when mounted to a canon body?

Im sorry Im a little bit confused, but do you mean you are using Nikon SB26 flash on your Canon XSi in Auto mode (the camera or the flash)? I dont think they can communicate though ? or did I misinterpret you ? or it actually can work like that (I dont know enough of this flash).
I asked because Im about to get one too....
Thanks.

the nikon flash itself can work in "auto" mode. the flash has switch for auto, manual, and strobe i believe. it won't be ttl like the canon flash, but pretty close. you set the aperture and iso in the flash to match your camera setting, and the flash will "auto" the output by measuring thru its light sensor.

Im holding the SB26 in my hand now and yes they do have those setting. oh man..this is so cool... I've never seen this flash in person till yesterday when my friend let me borrow his.
Allright I got it now.

Let me ask you this one more question:
If I set the flash in M (manual) mode, and use it off camera, I dont need to play with the ISO/Aperture settings and just use the power setting to add/reduce power, right ? I got confused on this part when Im playing with it yesterday.

Thanks a lot man...

if in manual, on camera or off, all you control is the output power, 1/1, 1/2, 1/4...etc, and zoom of the flash tube. the other settings like iso/aperture makes no difference.

Unlike the Canon version, the Sigma 500DG Super with sony/minolta foot CANNOT be fired off camera using a two conductor sync device (like a Pocket Wizard, CyberSync, PC flash cord or optical slave).

I would suggest avoiding the Sigma 500DG Super with sony/minolta foot for off camera flash.

Enjoy! Lon
