Well, it seems that cafes are the way to go then. There's a 5D2 I've had my eyes on for a while, might call up to see if it's still around!
If only... I'm in England... You have to be personally interviewed and inspected by the local police chief to even get a shotgun license!

Was out shopping with my wife, when we popped into our ;ocal specialist camera store. That weekend they were offereing the Tamron range at special prices. The Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 XR Di ll LD was £269.
So I pleaded with my wife that I needed a constant 2.8 lens and a young sales assistant confirmed stock and we bought it. On getting home and using the lens I realised it had VC !!!! The sales assistant had given me a £345 for £269.

The staff probably got in trouble for that. I also wonder how much of these cheap deals on Craigslist is stolen property...

Believe me for the value of money I have spent in that shop I feel a one off discount of 1% (on my total spend) is justified.

I just saw the title of this thread and had to reply.
Here in Canada, the 70-200 2.8 USM IS II usually goes for around $2750. Our local 'big box chain' electronics store (Future Shop - same as Best Buy in the US) had it on for $2499. The day I was planning on buying it, that morning I checked the price online to make sure it was still $250 off, and saw they had done a short-time price reduction of yet another $200. So.. I went to my local camera shop and got them to match the price. $2750 reg. and got it for $2299. (the fact that they were willing to match the price from their $2750 price tag really makes you ask how much mark-up there is on these things!! $2750 regular and they were willing to drop it to $2300 and still make it worth their while!)

I bought a 300 f/4L non IS in brand new condition and I mean it was an unused razor sharp closet queen for $750. I was my first white L and the financial carnage hasn't stopped since.

I don't have a "good deal" story to share, but I got a big chuckle out of your phrase, "financial carnage." You see, everything in my sig was bought within the last year. Carnage indeed.

Picked up a Canon 300mm 2.8 L (non-IS) for $1730.00 from eBay.
Had been looking for one for a while and others were still going for $2500-$3000. Some paint wear but functions like new. For me, it was a deal.
