Default New 580EX II - Sample Indoor Shot

Just got my 580EX II... In the enclosed shot, I used my 550EX as Master (no flash mode), and 580EX II (high speed sync) as slave. The combination allowed me to take this picture at f/1.2 at 1/125 (indoor - evening shot).

Also, I am interested in learning about using off-camera flash in natural light portraits. Can someone please point me in the right direction? Thanks.

With your lens(85L) you don't need that flash! BTW if you gonna use the flash make sure your shutter is at 1/250 or faster!

Hmmmm.....I'm no expert, but isn't 1/250 the fastest/maximum shutter speed that can be used with flash? Synch speed and all that...?

Or do you mean faster in the aperture sense....i.e. less is more!

He wrote he set the 580 EX II to "high speed sync", in which case it will allow you to go above the normal shortest sync speed.

Thats what I was thinking. Why would you open it up to 1.2 and use 2 flashes? I was thinking the flash was either controlled really well or not used very much when I was looking at the picture.

The 580EX was placed off camera on the left side, about six feet away pointing to the ceiling. Without it, I needed a higher ISO (400-600).

You're on the right track, but you didn't need High Speed Synch for 1/125.

For more possibilities, try different bouncing and reflecting possibilities. You can get reflectors pretty inexpensively, for example. Try using both flashes, one pointed at the ceiling and one either toward the back or toward a side with a reflector or a wall to bring some light to the surface of the subject.

It's all fun to play with, and as you learn, you can apply things to a wider variety of subjects.

I regularly use my flash with my two primes, AND shoot wide open! It allows me to use ISO100, and I generally just keep the shutter at 1/250s to keep the ambient exposure down, so the flash provides pretty much all of the illumination. I'd MUCH rather shoot with flash/low ISO and have some flexibility with aperture (stopping down to f/2.8 renders some amazing sharpness) than try to shoot wide open, ISO1600 and 1/60s...

Thanks...I wasn't aware of that!

The Strobist DVD will also help explain using off camera lighting....forewarning though, though very informative, it can be a bit boring..
