August 19, 2009 to be exact - photography's birthdate actually. Plus a great way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of all Canon SLR cameras ever built.

Expect to see either the 1D III's replacement or the EOS 60D, whichever comes first.

Or Canon might debut both.

With two EOS DSLRs (EOS 50D and EOS 500D) already making their debuts within a 12-month period instead of the usual 18-month period, there's no reason to say Canon won't announce the EOS 60D for the second half of 2009.

If EOS 60D debuts in Aug/Sept period, it is within the 12-month gap since EOS 50D's announcement. Or Canon could still unveils it next February in conjunction with the 2010 PMA Show.

With the 2010 Winter Olympics taking place in 1st-quarter of next year, announcing the replacement to the 1D Mark III will be too short a notice to entice pro photographers to take the risk to shoot the event. So an Aug/Sept 2009 debut is more likely.

The above represents my own speculations only.

To supplement Geoffery's educated speculation I would like to add that either of these groups of lenses will be upgraded to Mark II's.

35L, 135L and 180L

or

300/2.8L IS, 400/2.8L IS, 500/4L IS and 600/4L IS.

The first group because they're older and would sell more than the Super Telephotos.

The 2nd group for these added

1. Nikon released upgraded Super Telephotos in 2007.
2. The current Super Teles are 10yo this year and they have a product cycle of 11 years.
3. Winter Olympics and Fifa World Cup would happen early 2011.
4. These are film lenses not digital.

My speculations are based on established events.

300/4L IS and 400/5.6L will be upgraded late 2011 or early 2012.

L zooms will be dealt with 2012 and beyond.

No non-L EF lenses will be announced. Canon would probably discontinue more of them and replace it with EF-S equivalents.

Doubt me? Look at the Canon Museum website.

Thats a smart assumption

I'd say Non-L ZOOMs however, since things like the 50mm f/1.4 and 28mm f/1.8 are used by pros..same with the 50mm f/1.8 (Ok maybe less so there)

The EF-S is their consumer line of products now, Theres very little reason to still make full frame consumer zooms, since I highly doubt (OK i might be wrong here) many 5D photographers dont also have their money invested in the L optics anyways..

I predict a large discontinuation of product in Canon's lineup...The 28-200 and the 28-105 will probubly be axed, as will the 28-135 IS

The 28-135 IS will be replaced with a 17-105/135 IS that will also replace the 17-85 IS in Canon's lineup as a sort of reserved GP zoom with IS for people who dont want a 18-200

All of the 75-300s and the 100-300 can go, the 70-300 IS I see being taken off as well (The 55-250 covers basically the same range and its cheaper and I think sharper...perhaps an upgraded 55-250 USM would be good though) but then again it IS a good lens (Sort of..though I usually tell people to get a 70-200 f/4L instead)

I see the trinity of cheap wide primes going, the 35 f/2 becoming a EF-S lens, the 28mm f/1.8 becoming a 28mm f/1.4L (Or maybe a 28 f/1.8L)

Upgrading the vintage 135mm f/2.8SF lens (Though its a little dated of an effect to a lot of people) Maybe just make a 135mm f/2.8 IS USM and drop the 100mm f/2 instead..this would give an affordable 135mm IS prime for indoor sports shooters

I agree on supertele updates, and the 1D launching later this year, with the winter olympics coming early next year, Canon has to get those launched, I might even say sometime in the summer they will be announced, Shipping in Aug/Sept along with some new super teles, most likely the 300mm f/2.8L IS and the 400mm f/2.8L IS, given they're the most popular action/sport long lenses..

I also think the 60D will launch as well, I just know it will happen this year...

They should release a 24-70mm or 24-105mm 2.8 L IS right after I finally give up and buy the old one.

That would be massive And if it really did have L optics, it'd be an amazing full frame lens.

I'm okay with that. I need a good lens for the lower end of the focal range. My 60mm rules, as does my 70-200. I suppose a really good 18-50 would work, 18-70 preferable.

an EF-S 17-85 IS II would be great, I can see Canon adding an updated version of that lens given Nikon's large range of normal kit zooms...

I just hope they make it -better- than the old one!
