Default Jesus Christ Superstar

This is my first attempt at the performing arts side of photography.

Below 2 shots of a grammar school staging of the musical Jesus Christ Superstar. Photos taken with a 1Dm3 and the 85mm 1.2

I spent most of the evening trying to figure out how to balance the shallow depth of field with the lack of light. Really enjoyed it actually.

CC would be much appreated.

The first shot has a whole lot of negative space behind the subject's focus, and none in front of it. It looks like there's a bunch more action going on just out of frame to the right (or stage left, to the anal crew folk out there).

The second shot I like better, but there's still a bunch of nothing off to the left side of this image.

Also would add the lighting here is kind of bad. Magenta/red light (to me) most of the time just ruins a shot.

Second one is great though.

Agree that the second is the better shot. Is that a member of the audience getting ready to throw a paper plane in #2?

Thanks for the input everyone. Much appreciated.
René, the 'paper plane' is actually part of the performance.
The supporting cast were waving red rags to add to the drama of Judas committing suicide.

You'd find it hard to do much with the first picture because of the different colours of light (bluish on the left of the picture, reddish on the right).

Agreed about the second one, though - a much stronger photograph. Might it benefit from a crop? There's a lot of dead space on the left hand side:
