Default 7 shot HDR with flash

This was the first time I worked flash into an HDR shot. There was a bare bulb flash in the doorway fired via radiopopper. I fired the flash all the way up to the two darkest exposures -- at that the sync speeds were so insanely high it was pretty useless.

Builder loves these doors. I would have rather shot it from an angle, but you lost the door shapes.

Thoughts and comments welcome, of course.

That's amazingly sharp and the colors are excellent. Nice work Matt! Was that shot with the 5d MK II?

An even $700,000. On a quarter acre lot. 5000 sq ft.

Actually, no. The 1D3. Its way to easy to bracket with that camera.

Gawd Almighty - I was afraid of that. Judging by appearances, that would be $1.5M or more where I am. As far as the straight on angle, I think it looks good and might do a better job of illustrating how large the home is. Nice shot.

It's a nice shot, and the door came out good. Maybe I am too critical, but when I use HDR, it's to lighten the shadows and tone down the light spots. This has some deep shadows that would look better if they were less obvious.

You and I are pretty similar I think, in the sense that I like HDR when it's a process and not an effect.

On shooting these houses, I have gone back and forth on my philosophy on the shadows. First, I do try to shoot on in a way that minimizes them. I have in the past removed quite a few of them, but I seem to get a lot of "flat" comments on those images.

Right now, I have been using the shadow/highlights tools via smart filters in CS4 to open them up (like by the chimney on the front of the house) but leaving some semblance of the darkness for depth.

I almost cloned out the shadow from the chimney on the roof (there is zero detail left there) but thought it looked a little awkward, so it stayed.

Maybe if you shot another two shots on the blown out end and included them in the Render, for a 9 shot HDR, the program could lessen the effect of the shadow using those last two shots in the math. The chimney one is most obvious.

Thank you! that's the 16-35 II. I'll try to put up the individuals tonight.

That might be the ticket. A 9 stop bracket. We are SO spoiled with digital!

Nice Matt looks like you got nice detail in both highlights and shadows and avoided that really bad halo effect. GOOD JOB.
Maybe bring the door down about a half stop and mentioned but I think it looks great.
