After using a fixed lens DC for a couple of years I decided to try out a DSLR and purchased a 450D a couple of months ago. I really would appreciate some C and C on these initial efforts

G'day mate (won't call you Rank
Accomplished shots I don't like the composition in #2 - rule of thirds for the corner might have helped and even though the verticals are pretty much vertical the horizontals go all sorts of awkward angles with that perspective. #3 is just over-weak subject matter... nicely done but inherently limited. #7 is a mixed bag... that angle makes it look like there's an enormous amount of nose there (I realise that's unlikely, and being well equipped in that department myself - I'm not wanting to throw stones). I think part of the problem is the exposure, with the area beside the camera over-bright. There are also clear sharpening artifacts, especially between the camera body and face, where a single-pixel white line is visible and even brighter than the face. The focus and sharpness around the eye looks outstanding at the size posted. All up, I'd have liked the camera closer to the visible eye - I assume she was looking through a viewfinder with her right eye, so perhaps you shot the wrong eye? To have hair from that side running near-horizontally across the forehead also looks quite unnatural... a bit spooky even. Cheers, Tony

Wow - what a prize group of shots.
I can't find anything wrong with any of them. My favorite is the arches. Welcome to the POTN!

I like the simplicity of these shots. You've done a nice job of keeping extraneous distractions out of the photos. #2 is probably my least favorite -- I'm not sure if it's the angles or what. For me, there is just no interesting focal point. All the shots are good, though, very good, indeed.

Thanks for the comments guys. It helps an old newbie no end.
Tony your critique is excellent. I concede all your comments. It often takes a fresh pair of eyes to point out the obvious. I will certainly be back here in the future when I have doubts about my technique. |
