Default G10 defect: Canon confirms; G10 hardware Recall; Service Notice

has anyone seen this:

http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/27/c...-of-fourth-di/

http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/27/c...-of-fourth-di/

Now, my not even a week old G10 has the serial number in line with what they are reporting. Also, there seems to be a mark on the LCD side of the battery cover. Here is a pic of that:

Does that look like the mark they may be talking about?

Very interesting. Thanks for reporting. My camera falls into that serial # range but I have not had any lines show up nor have a read about anyone having that problem.

http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/co...=2112&id=57370

Are any of you affected by this recall?

pisses me offf!! i just had a major fiasco with canon canada about my 1D mark III recall which had to be sent TWICE because of incompetence.

Yes, I'm not a happy camper either !
I got the G10 thinking it would be hassel free and not have to deal with dirty sensors, firmware / hardware updates ect...
I'm still trying to figure out what the repair entails ? Are they replacing the sensor or replacing the entire camera ?

It looks like the mark on the LCD side is related to an old issue according to this:

Weird. at least this time, when creating a repair order, it sugests to send it to Whitby ontario rather than mississauga (where i had the 1D fiasco)

yea, I already checked, and the mark on mine is indeed on the LENS side, not the LCD lol. I confused myself apparently lol.

Just updated my Software all ok. I will wait and see about sending my G10 away. May wait a while in case there is another update for something to come. Thats my luck, send it away, wait 6 weeks, only to find another recall. lol. I don't think the recalls expire too soon if ever.

'Among products with the serial numbers described above, if there is a marking on the lens side inside the battery cover like the one in the image below, the issue has already been corrected, and you may continue to use your camera as is with no further action required.'

Nice of them to tell me before I bought it.

I wont be sending mine in unless I have a problem. I printed out a copy of the recall and as far as I'm concerned there is no expiration date on it. This way if I have a dust issue once I'm out of warranty I will send in my camera for the line recall and avoid paying a cleaning fee for an issue that Canon refuses to fix.

My serial # indicated that it was an affected G10, however, it had the mark that indicates that the problem was corrected. It is about 3-4 weeks old now.
