Default Think Tank Urban Disguse 35 bag fits 50D with grip and 400mm 5.6 attached!

Just a quick note. This is a really well designed bag. I was wanting a bag to fit my 50D gripped attached to my 400mm lens and it works very well. It has this flap that folds into the laptop compartment to accommodate the grip on the camera.

The laptop compartment will then fit a 10 inch laptop instead of a 13.3 inch laptop.

Binoculars fit easily in the single front pocket under the flap (with a new buckle style).

Anyway, there doesn't seem to be much information on this bag, so I thought I'd give it a great thumbs up. I've used the Urban Disguise 40 for the last year and really wanted just a little more space for misc items. It was between this and the UD 50, but the 50 still couldn't get the body/lens combo in it that I was wanting.

Let me know if I can answer any questions.

Sounds like a good bag, potential to be my next one! Mind posting some pictures?

Any chance you've done a few pictures? I wanted this one but went with the Lowepro Classified 160AW instead because the inside dimensions were larger. However, my 50D gripped with 70-200 f2.8L IS is VERY tight. The zipper barely closes - not to my liking. If yours fits I would love to see how you are doing it.

Impulse buy yesterday and this bag has just been delivered......had a quick look at it and it looks good.

Will give it a go over the weekend and put a review up.

Well, please tell me what kinds of pictures you want to see. Here are some. You can see my 50D gripped with 400mm 5.6L lens, 70-200 F4 lens and 17-55 IS 2.8 with hood and the Eeeee PC. You can see the flap in the laptop compartment which allows the grip of the camera to overflow into that area.

Here's the inside of the bag, configured with a slightly wider center. With the lens hood of the 17-55, the lens sits a few inches off the bottom of the bag. No problem, it's all padded. And finally, everything in the bag!

This bag is so much nicer for the longer Canon lenses that have trouble in bags. I love having an option to carry my 400mm gripped.

Thanks for the review. I've been looking for something that isn't huge but can hold a gripped DSLR with a long lens attached plus a few extra items, and this looks like it fits the bill.

Needsnow--that's fantastic. I was just about to pull the cord on buying a Classified 160 for my gripped 50D with 100-400mm attached because I wasn't sure whether the UD35 would zip close. Your photos clinch it for me. How heavy is it when you have all your gear in it? Have you carried it for any length of time? Thanks

Needsnow - are you saying you can put your gripped 50 with the 400 attached into the bag? I'm looking to leave my 70-200 attached to my body.

ylimehajile:

Yes, that is obviously my longest lens. So, I show the bag with the 400mm attached to my 50D gripped.

powaysteve:

I only carry that much gear when I need to get everything to a photo shoot. As for long hikes, I go for the 360 or the Lowepro Primus. Having the optional shoulder backpack straps would at least give you carrying options in the field if you had to take the bag along. Also, because of it's slim profile - it fits nicely into your back.

Just so you can see clearly that the 50D + 400mm lens fits comfortably in the bag without stressing the zipper, etc., here are a few more pictures.

I too am very fond of the UD35 mainly because of the added height.

I don't carry a gripped body, but I easily carry a 5DII, 17-40L, 24-105L, and 70-200LIS/4 along with a 580EXII flash and a MacBook plus the battery chargers for camera and computer inside the bag. Some filters, extra camera battery, memory cards, and cleaning supplies are in the front zipped pocket. The front pouch and side pouches are unused and available if needed.

I can substitute a 24-70L for the 24-105L and it still fits (the 17-40 is sideways under the camera/lens with a padded divider separating them. I can pack it with any of the 3 lenses mounted to the camera for quick access to shoot. A 70-200LIS/2.8 can be substituted for the /4 version if the flash is moved to a outer pocket as it is pretty tight otherwise. There is no problem closing the zipper as there is space above the camera.

The first configuration weighs 12 pounds without the computer, and the computer would add 3 pounds for the Unibody MacBook or 1.5 pounds for the MacBook Air. It gets pretty heavy if the larger f/2.8 lenses are substituted.

If you carry a gripped body or pro sized camera, the slot for the computer can be re-arranged to accommodate the grip and will still hold a small Netbook sized computer.

This is probably my favorite camera bag for traveling light with a full complement of gear.
