I really want to get a relatively cheap, but good value P&S camera to complement my current DSLR. I think my Sony DSC-W1 is starting to show its age, but it served me well over the past 5 years and it took AA batteries. I'm looking at the A series because it accepts AA batteries which is perfect for travelling. I can get the A590IS for $130 right now. I'm not sure if the A2100 IS is the successor to the A590 IS or not. Right now I think the A590IS will serve me well and I don't need the extra MPs that the A2100 IS will provide. The only major question to ask is what will the A2100 offer to me that the A590 IS won't besides the MP?

Well what the A2100 won't offer is Tv, Av or M shooting modes and an optical viewfinder. Do any of those matter? It has more reach (36-214 vs. 35-140 mm equivalent focal lengths), but that's probably the major practical advantage.

I wholeheartedly agree with the previous post. I'm not sure what Canon's thinking on these newer models (less features/flexibility just more megapixels), personally I'm amazed that the 590IS isn't their biggest seller (or maybe it is?).

You can pick up the A1000IS for the same price as the A590IS on Amazon.
We have the A570IS (older version of the A590IS), and we LOVE it. Only problem is that the flash take such a long time and sucks the batteries quickly, so we nearly always have the flash off to preserve battery life.

The A1000 is also a "non-manual" model like the A2100.

Wow, I had no idea. That's just ODD (that they would remove those features.)

Thanks for the information. I think the answer is pretty self-evident after reading your post.

My A590 owns every camera out there in the P&S. And for the $99 I paid for it, it's the best value-to-IQ there is. Manual controls for the extra win as well.

For the money, A590. But look at Dpreview's budget camera holiday shopping guide for ideas. I think the a Panny and a Sony beat the A590, but I dont' recall which one.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/Q408...roup/page3.asp However, reading the review kind of scared me as it said the A590 occasionally overexposes on bright days! Is this true? Also, can someone comment on the viability of using CHDK firmware on the A590? I'm not sure if the RAW file is any better than the JPG file. |

Well, you noticed the review stated that the exposure problem was while shooting on full auto mode... I personally try and stay away from that setting, I like having more control.
As far as CHDK, it opens up a lot of flexibility with the camera beyond just RAW (I don't use that much to be perfectly honest); a better histogram, an accurate battery meter, too many other features to mention here. IMHO, get one while you can! |

I've had it loaded for awhile now with no trouble.
Anyone else out there with different experiences using CHDK? |

What do you guys think about the price? $130 seems like an amazing deal for the camera.

I paid less. Worth every penny.
