I enjoy flying RC planes, and since I have my new lens, I have enjoy taking photos of them as well. This was a scale meeting with a lot of very nice models.

Thanks guys, I'm starting to get the hang of this lens now. When I can follow the faster ones a little better that is!!
rivman, yup it can be as expensive as you want it to be. One bloke had a 3 level trailer (all alloy) just to transport his fleet. A single turbine like this F-22 below can run to about A$ 12K depending on fitout. I'm more of the cheap and nasty plane guy as they tend not to last too long under my control! Axxis, yeah, she's a beauty. Here's another shot of it.

R/C Airplanes ARE more expensive than photography! Ask me how I know. I finally gave it up about 10 years ago, but when you get bit by the giant scale bug, and you have $2000+ in the air and realize it can all come to a screatching halt with one dumb thumb accident, you start to rethink things. At least I don't have to worry about smashing my Canon into the ground! Much more relaxing to me.
Great shots! I wish I had my camera gear I have now when I was flying R/C. Then again, I guess I could attend a local flyin and get some good shots now too. |

Nice shots. That f-22 is more expensive than all my camera gear put together. That's why i stick to my foamies, but even those are getting expensive.

Some great shots there. As another former builder / flyer I can attest to the cost but at least now you can learn to fly on a simulator rather than by crashing as a beginner. They also have buddy box transmitters so an instructor can take over instantly if you blow a moneuver. Radio systems cost less today than when |flew and the planes can be bought partly pre essembled all the way up to almost ready to fly, which also dictates price levels, but means more flying time vs build time for those who really want to fly rather than glue things together. Every time I cover an event, (our season is starting in a few weeks) I think it's time to get back into it.

No prop blur problems with RC planes, I see.

much easier than full size for the prop blur for sure. I was shooting at between 500th and 640th for the prop planes, but ramped up for the jet to 1000th as I had a hard time getting a decent keeper rate last time out. My skill level and the speed they fly control this at the moment.
Most of these in the shots would be running around an 85 to 100 cc engine with a 20" or so prop spinning full speed at around 7-8,000 rpm. Idle or approach rpm would be around 1500. It's hard to even see the props at all in some shots when I went slower shutter.
