Cool Landing Locations?

Sorry if this is the wrong forum for this... I have a question about locations. There are a ton of locations around Denver where I live that I would like to shoot. however most are private property. For example... one place, is an ice cream shop. I want to shoot in there, something fun and creative, and I have NO idea how to go about asking for permission to shoot in locations like this. Another one is a diner by me... the decor inside is SO cute, and a pinup shoot would be fantastic in there...but again...how do I go about this?Would you guys suggest going in, showing them my book, giving them my business card and letting them know that I'm doing a non-commissioned shoot (these are TFP so far, on my request) and ask them if we can use their location possibly on off hours??How do you guys go about gettng neat locations?Help/ advice?

Well, unless you ask the answer will always be NO...

I understand though that it's sometimes tough to screw up ones courage. Good Luck...

Why not offer them a print or two for their decor. Especially if the theme you have in mind fits their style?

Granted, a G&N shoot might not go over well if Mom and Dad bring the Kids in for ice cream but...

...but you could purposely shoot some interior or "fitting" shots that would go just fine in their location. A fully-clothed B&W of a "pin-up" style shot at the ice cream bar would hang nicely in the establishment.

Great idea to offer prints in trade for location!

Well Im actually leaning more towards fashion than glamour... but you're right... I could definetly take some shots inside, etc and offer them some images for their store.

There's this BEAUTIFUL 100 year old hotel here that I've been dying to shoot at. Not sure what to offer them however lol

Well, if you just ask them to use the place and frequent the establishment outside of the shoot, that might mean more than a print on the wall.

I've not had to do it for model shoots but whenever i've wanted to shoot in a location a simple chat telling them why and about the work i do has always worked. A lot of small business owners are happy and flatterd to have you ask to shoot photos on their premises. It becomes harder when you are asking to shoot in a branch of a large corporation. For example here in the UK we have a chain of pubs called weatherspoons and as part of an editorial piece i had to shoot some club/bar/dancing social type photos. The other smaller clubs were much easier to get permission to shoot in whereas for the larger place i had to call head office, put through to different departments, then get a request in writing sent to them and all that.

How about shooting at a "Little Chef"? Only the UK based members will know what I'm referring to! LOL
