yea I have it on auto focus, one shot af, and center-weighted metering. Should I set it to something other than center weighted metering?

Try switching the metering. I'd suggest evaluative.

Also, try manually focusing it. Try bringing down the shutter speed if you can. Also, if you could post a picture of what you mean, that might help me a little!

the first picture is 1/30 f/1.8 ISO 100
the second picture is 1/30 f/2.5 ISO 100
both evaluative

The first picture is still coming soft on the 18-55 comparing to the second picture. They're not as sharp as I wanted

What lens was used? I'm guessing a 50mm f/1.8 (judging by your signature).

It seems in focus to me. In the first picture, the lens seems to be focusing on the "18". The second picture, the entire lens is in focus. Try raising the ISO a little bit. Try ISO 800, keep the shutter speed the same, and shoot again at f/1.8 and then f/22. Post results, please.

Photo by me. It kind of reminds me of your photo, but I have no focusing issues. Everything is perfectly in focus to me.

Okay, picture #1 is perfectly in focus. Picture #2 is a little bit blurry, which I would guess was caused by the shutter speed, and Picture #3 is also perfectly in focus. But the shutter speed was 3 seconds. :\ I really don't see ANY problems with focusing.

I'm new to dslr's, just picked up my t1i a few weeks ago. I have been doing a lot of lurking on the site, and have found a lot of good information here. Here are a few shots I have taken. C&C appreciated
I posted these in the critique corner as well, but I'm trying to get as much feedback as possible, and they were shot with my t1i so I figured it would be ok. Please let me know what you think.

Not bad . I saw the first two before and I like them. The third one was shot at F/1.8 and that is the reason why the image isn't sharp. 50/1.8 II lens is great, but it produces soft images when using widest aperture. It is sharp at F/2.8 and higher numbers. Some PP sharpening may help . Beautiful sunset.

And it will keep going soft, because that's what this lens do at F/1.8
Don't worry it is normal.

Also more good news, they are not dead or dying pixels. I cant explain it, but some pixels are misfiring or not firing at all when you do long exposures. But its not specific pixels, it varies from image to image. I checked this by doing a 30 sec exposure with the lens cap on. The reason is because if a pixel does not fire it will appear as a white dot on a black page. The result: there was purple, red, white, and green pixels that fired against a solid black sea of correctly fired pixels. At least 4 different areas. In the 1st few test shots of the same image a dead pixel would show up in different spots. So my conclusion is its just a defect of long exposures in cameras. wow that was a lot! I hope somebody reads this lol
Hey, man. Thanks for your fast reply, I appreciate that. One more thing to say, my deads don't change their positions, every time in the same exact spot, same color-cast. Did you use ISO100 while doing lens cap test? because high (auto) ISO noise may look like dead pixels sometime. And the weird thing is why I don't have those deads on fast exposures, hmm. I will do a little research on this, I need to know the truth

I just found a spec of dust in my viewfinder. what should I do to clean it? when I take the picture, the dust particle isn't there. I'm kinda worried. =[

Thanks ecka. I will shoot at a higher f stop and see if it's still soft. =]

50mm f/1.8 II isn't that sharp at f/1.8. Stop it down for better sharpness. This gives you wider DOF which also helps with sharpness though it doesn't give you that narrow DOF and good bokeh you want. You need to pay more for a lens that is sharp at f/1.8 unfortunately (or my copy isn't the best).

Dust in the viewfinder, who cares? If you want you can use a blower and perhaps blow it onto your sensor which might be worse except that the sensor actually is self cleaning. I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.

Got my 500d a few weeks ago and i absolutely love it. Its my first DSLR as i have been using a panasonic fz28 up until now. No way could i go back to it.

the 50 f1.8 is a little soft wide open but close it up a tad. this shot was at f2.5

Few of my favs i have taken with my new cam and the 55-250 lens that i love for its size / price / quality.
