Default Mrs Hummingbird on her nest

Out at the Reifel Bird sanctuary, we came across Mrs Hummingbird on her nest. She has at least one little one there, but I couldn't get close enough to shoot the little 'un well. It looked like it had just hatched a couple of days ago.

Here's the best shot I got of mom on the nest:

I think she's a rufous.

Sweet shot. How high was the nest off the ground? Just curious.

The nest was about 3 feet off the ground, but since it was down the slope a bit from the path we were on, the net effect was that she was almost at the ground level of the path.

I'm unhappy that we couldn't get a better vertical into the nest to see the little hummer inside

The only nests I have seen were 5 feet or less. I'm kind of keeping track by asking people who have seen them, and so far only one has been up in the tree.

Make that two Mitch...we found one last year about 30' up in a Maple and the only reason we knew it was there was it was in the line of sight of a Coopers Hawk nest we followed. Funny watching the little Hummingbird buzz the Hawks all the time.

Great finding the nest...hope you can manage some captures of the little one without disturbing the female.

What a lovely nest! And a nice shot all 'round. So they tend to nest quite low to the ground, interesting.
