Wait.... how? Care to share with us newbies? Is there a way to make the camera snap when the lighting goes off?

No, you just have to be quick....

Actually a tripod and a bulb setting with a remote works well. Open the shutter, wait for the lightning hits then release the shutter for the next shot. The old saying 'f 8 and be there helps'.

God's own flash system. Very nice capture here. Good job. Do you have more you can post?

Yes, please. Can you walk us newbies through? Why that spot? What exif? How did you decide what settings to use? How did you keep the camera dry, even? The whole shebang, if you can...

I dream of catching a moment like that...I'd appreciate all the help I can get.

Best-

haha wow great to see so much interest in your work you know.
this is the first weekend i have my camera so it was nice to try it out in all kinds of situations.

ok most of these i went shutter speed bulb and i sat in a camping chair in a garage that faced open-ness and after the lightning strikes i let go of the shutter. some are f 5.6 some are a little more but i noticed if i did like 11 or more the lightning wasnt as good.id say at 300mm(which is what i was at) id set it to 6-8 range in the future.

here are some more pictures of that night.enjoy.

Ah yes, very nice indeed. Thanks for the extra photos. Where do you live that you can get this stuff? We just don't seem to get a lot of lightning in SW Washington. The photos remind me of living in northern NY where these storms moved thru every week all summer. The only thing missing is the sound. Thanks again.
