Default First widespread critiques

These are a couple of photos that I have taken for a class I am in. I would love some feed back.

I love the textures you are drawing from these.
What is the assignment about?

Ahh fair enough.

With the second shot, what is the thing in the background?
Its a little distracting. Is the background timber as well? (If so, a little more detail in this would be awesome!)

Not sure what to suggest with the first one, as its quite busy. The leaf in the foreground is a little distracting too.

I'm quite liking the second shot.

[Should also mention that I only see 2 photos, there is an image tag at the top file:///C:/Users/at_roberts/Pictures/All%20Photos/3289870949_3bea63fc00_o.jpg
referring to a file on your machine and not one that's been uploaded]

The second shot is of a canon barrel at Ft. Flagler, WA. (circ. 1909?) The background is the shrapnel shield

Ohh I see.

I quite like the harsh lighting on it too.
Do you have a less cropped shot, so that you can see the whole canon structure from the same angle?

I actually am enjoying the second one..I would clone out the shrapnel shield though..just me.

The first one doesn't do anything for me..

The original is too big to attach. Sorry but you can't see the whole shield anyway.

I see where you where going with the first one, but I just think there is too much in the frame (need some negative space) and the leaf in the front is a little distracting.

The second one, i really like! Nice and simple

Thanks all for the input. Old military "things" and macro flower shots are one thing that i really hope to turn into something for myself. Thanks again for the advise.

#1... the leaf in the front is a little distracting to me also, but I do like it overall.

LOVE #2. I'd leave it as is. The shield in the background gives context, IMHO.
