Default Self Portrait Mug Shot

Well, it wasn't easy, but I got it...or close to it anyway. I don't have any studio equip and no room for one either.

So, I hung a white shower curtain over the drapes in the living room. Placed a stool 10 feet out in front. Then set up my tripod on the other side of the couch with the ID MKIII and 100 f/2 lens with 580EX II aimed at the sloping ceiling (15 feet high).

I tried to blow out the background with a second flash (Sigma EF 500 DG Super). I had it set for 1/4 power but I should have shot 1/1. I kept getting inconsistent shots, too dark subject, too dark background. I finally gave up on the second flash and used just the 580 with the white bounce card out and some+ on the Flash exposure.

I used the Phottix wireless remote to fire the camera. It worked well.
Bottom line, the white background isn't as white as I would like, but hopefully it will work. I was asked for black Polo shirt with light background (preferably white).

Oh, did I mention I'm not a studio photographer?
Comments welcome.
Mike

Thanks John. It's going to be on a press pass so maybe brighter is better.

Classic mug shot Mike

Honestly, I found that one of the toughest things to do as a photographer is to get on the other side of the lens and do self portraits. Not an easy task.

That BG is uniform enough, you can do a "color selection" with an eyedropper and select the whole BG and and hit it with the dodge tool or a brightness/contrast or white balance tool.

Easy fix. not a bad shot.

Yeah Mike, that BG is a shower curtain I had bought to act as a diffuser for outdoor shooting but haven't used it. It had fold wrinkles so I sprayed it with a water bottle and threw it into the dryer for a little while. The wrinkles came out.

Redneck studio at it's best!
