This is something that i struggled with on a recent musician shoot, but i think more light(reflector?) or the camera-right side of his face would make this shot better. However I like it like it is too.

I really like this. IMO more light on his left side is not needed. I like how his left side of the face is dark but still eye can be seen. The pose is good and the piano is lit well enough.
If I had to nit IŽd clone part of piano just next to his shoulders. I know its part of the piano but the highlights are bit distracting |

Thank you! Great advice on cloning that highlight out! Will do! This is exactly why i ask for CC.

Real nice shot though I agree about reflecting some light onto the dark side. You don't need expensive equipment. You can get a poster sized piece of white foam core board for less than $3 that will work great until you upgrade to better items.

I like the lighting and the simplicity of the image.
The pose is a little awkward tho. The tilt of the head is not working, IMO. And he looks seriously ticked off. I feel uncomfortable viewing the photo because I feel like I'm being dogged. |

My thoughts exactly. The pose and expression contradicts what the piano usually conveys. They don't match, IMO. However, if I were to see him play, I might feel that his pose and expression is fitting. Until that time, the picture is out of balance between the subject and the piano. |

yeah, he is not your usual piano player... just stuff he plays and the way he does it is pretty extreme. We spent lots of time discussing his image and his "look". First several look were a tad soft/gentle... While we liked the results we thought it was too "traditional" and went for the "tough guy by the piano look". I agree it causes some imbalance but I also thought it would strike the viewer a little more...
