Default Shiver me timbers

2-masted fishing schooner showing masts and rigging. I sort of hunkered down near the foot of the mast and aimed skyward. As I stood chimping, a sudden gust of wind blew my good Borsalino cap into the harbor. Drats. Anyway, I'm left with this photo. And an attempted B&W conversion. Do either of these work? I'm mostly concerned with composition, but have at it.

Sorry about the hat... bummer.

I do find myself constantly following the masts down and frustrated at not seeing more, especially with the more distant mast. We've got the same camera and lenses, I'm guessing it wasn't the 12-24....

I like the colour more - fresher feel; perhaps the monochrome forces the eye to contemplate the composition intellectually rather than just enjoying the shot.

Cheers, Tony

They look better than my attempts at rigging shots. I tried to get the Lady Washington's rig last summer when they came to Vancouver - I was never able to catch exactly the image I wanted. Of course, I felt a little rushed due to the other sightseers wandering the deck at the same time.

I do like the way the grain pattern on the mast shows up in both, but I think the color version is better.

Tony, that's my sentiment, too. Wish I could have included more but just wasn't possible to get it all in one shot from onboard. Tall ship, but the deck was actually pretty cramped. A wider lens might have been interesting but I also wanted to capture the linearity. Everything is a tradeoff, I suppose. Really appreciate your comments.

Hi Chad, the ship is named the L.A. Dunton, docked at Mystic Seaport, Connecticut. There were plenty of people milling about but I avoided them with this shot. I was able to see the Lady Washington in Aberdeen but didn't bring a camera (ack!).
