Default Dance Recital

Here are a few of a dance recital on Sunday. I started out using my 5D but just after intermission the mirror came loose and I finished with my 30D both using 70-200L 2.8 lens from about 9 rows back. It was quite dark so they were shot at either 3200 or 1600 iso and rather slow.

What was bad about the mirror, Canon had worked on the lens and camera last fall and created a front focus issue. I sent it back in the first of May for repair. When I called them Monday morning they were quick to send me a FEDEX label and I find out there is a bulletin/fix for the mirror issue. Why didn't they fix that when they had it the last two times..... At least I carried my 30d in with me and had it ready.

Thanks Alan, it's sure fun when they come out like you want them too. I used to worry about shooting at high iso but it's much better than being too dark.

Sure do Dwight. The first one shows how short the depth of field is at 3.2. Both were shot at 3200 iso.

Oh, yes, I know about short depth of field! And I know how bad high ISO is for detail, too!

That's true but at least you can get the shot. I end up doing that a lot at events like that or a symphony where they don't allow a flash ( they actually don't allow photography at all but since they get published they let me shoot).

I like some of the aspects of these shot and dislike others. The framing and the subjects look good. What I dislike is the lack of movement in them. Afterall, these are dance photos. Not a deal breaker but more sense of movement would have made these better...at least in my opinion.

Do you mean to shoot at slower shutter speeds?
