There is a third layer here too, the piles of David Eden amplification equipment below Mingus offers a modern counter point that says a lot about how much has changed. Yet Alphonso's passion is clearly evident in the foreground, showing us that nothing has changed. It has a "chronological" feel to it. I admit, I had to stare at this a while before I appreciated the composition. At first I wasn't sure about losing the neck and head of the bass, but the inclusion of a very famous Mingus shot pulls the whole thing together. It isn't really about Alphonso, or Mingus, but more a study on the passion and innovation that a few unique individuals have expressed and ignited in all of us that love music. Very nice.
