Default One of those things I love about sRAW from 5D Mk II

.... is that if you realize that you should have shot full resolution at 21 megapxels after the fact, Canon has embedded a FULL RESOLUTION jpeg in your sRAW file! Yeah that's right... a jpeg with the 3744 x 5616 pixels instead of the 2574 x 3861 pixels you get out of an sRAW file.

Ok, you wonder how to get to the file?

These applications can extract the full-res jpeg from the sRAW file:

Photo Mechanic http://www.camerabits.com/
Breezebrowser http://www.breezesys.com/BreezeBrowser/
Graphic Converter (Mac application) http://www.lemkesoft.com/

And then there's a free solution that's a "hack" in your system: http://www.rawworkflow.com/instant-j...m-raw-utility/
Only disadvantage with this one is that it doesn't contain all your EXIF, the other apps (that cost money) does preserve that info though.

And this also means you don't really need to shoot RAW+JPEG, the jpeg file is already in the raw file.

Have fun extracting!

Hmm. Didn't know that. If you right-click can you Show Package Contents and retrieve the file?

I wish Apple would get around to supporting sRAW. It's silly they don't.

Tony, the "hack" lets you do that, right click and you can extract the file... and it's extremely fast!

Because when I'm doing family photo stuff I don't need those 24 mb files.

Trey, they are a bit different all of them. The Photo Mechanic is great for you to cull images, but it's not a raw editor. The Breezebrowser is a raw editor, not too bad one at that. The Graphic Converter is just what the name say really.... it can read almost any image file format under the sun.

When shooting weddings I don't want to come home with 50-60 Gigabyte of files. So I shoot sRAW as most of the images won't be blown up in mega sizes anyway. sRAW gives me the file size equal to my 40D's full RAW. Works well for that type of shooting.

Fantastic, thanks!

I shoot sRAW or L-jpg, most of the time. Didn't realize I was shooting both formates while in sRAW. I'll probably never shoot L-jpg again.

Works well for MOST shooting. There aren't many reasons to shoot 21mp.

Yeah, well I wanted just to make the point that I might shoot 2,000 images or more during a day.... so that's a lot of images to handle when you get home after a wedding. Smaller size is totally doable then. My disks aren't choking.

I bought a license for Photo Mechanic, and LOVE IT!! It is a terrific Culling/ Sorting Program. I can also add more data to the Exif, including Copyright Usage.

Definitely useful. Just want to point out that this saved my cousin once. One of the RAWs got corrupted during the writing to the card. We were able to extract the "preview" JPEG and save the shot. Definitely not as high res but did the job.

Can you tell what level of compression has been applied to the embedded JPEG? I would suspect that Canon would compress this embedded JPEG a lot more than the regular JPEGs to avoid having it take up too much space. If so, it would not have the same quality as the regular JPEGs (but it may still be good enough).
