Please bear with me- newbie!! Camera recommendations?

Hey All-
I am researching cameras and am a bit overwhelmed! You all seem like experts and professionals. Any advice on a great camera for shooting shots of moving children or indoor shots of children? I have a horrible camera now and although I can sometimes get a nice picture outdoors - indoors is awful. I am excited to toss the piece of junk in the trash and move onwards and upwards! I am thinking about the $500 range. Any ideas? TIA!!

For the $500 range, the Canon Rebel XS would be ideal. It's a good beginner DSLR and excellent to learn on, and pretty decent quality, for sure. I'd definitely recommend it over an Olympus or the Nikon D40. I used to sell cameras, so I had to research all of them.

with your budget, i think the XS gives the best bang for the buck!

you should probably research more if a DSLR is really what you want. not a high end P&S. like a g10 or an lx.

I think that is the first step for you.

^going by that, if you're looking for a high res point and shoot, Canon makes one called the SX 10

...but honestly, if you're going to spend 500, I say get the DSLR... they've become A LOT more user friendly, and if you treat them properly, they're built to last for years.

Thanks for all the replies you all! My brother has the Rebel and loves it. He has beautiful photos of his children. I guess I was a little hesitant to purchase the Rebel b/c of it's large size. Any opinions on the Canon Powershot G10?
I guess I need a fast camera to get good shots of the kiddos? What do I look for in a camera to take good indoor photos?

The G10 is a great camera too for what you are looking for. I saw one that my friend had it it looked pretty good. I just don't remember if it has shutter lag. With moving kids, I think it is critical to get a camera that takes the picture the moment you push the button. This will become especially critical as your kids get in to sports

one great thing to remember with sports is to keep the shutter button half way down focusing that way the camera is ready to fire that perfect shot. I haven't found a camera that had so much shutter lag that I couldn't do that and still get a great shot.

I am no pro here, but my 2 cents on this topic. I would say, if this is gonna be your first DSLR camera, then don't buy it in a KIT. Some KIT lenses are not up to the mark. Infact you can save some bucks but not buying the additional lenses that come along with the camera in the KIT and instead by 50mm lens separately and you will still love your shots.

I think that the XS suggestion was a good one. If it was me I would get the XS with a kit lens to start out with, then pick up the canon 50mm f/1.8 or the canon 35mm f/2 for indoors. Then save up and buy an off-camera flash like the 430EX. The Canon 55-250mm is also a great bang for your buck if you want to get outdoor shots of your kids.

You could also keep an out of for Bing cashback deals. I saw an Xsi with kit lens for $480 a month back.
