Nice.
A bit more fill light would have been nice for the darker areas. A white piece of paper, or something like that to act as a reflector may have worked.
Boost the mid range levels in PS perhaps and pull back some of the blue, and it would be spot on.

Good shot, i'd have pointed the camera up a tad bit so the actually subject is a bit lower in the picture and there's even more background blurring, but this already works very good. I agree on adding the fill light (maybe even more than you already have in your second edit).

Good job!

IMO:

The band of table cloth below the subject is not serving the subject and the food is naturally lit from one or more windows to the right and behind the subject. The plates compete with the subject (ratio of subject to other content).

To shoot food you basically need tabletop type lighting which illuminates all surfaces evenly. In this case fill flash or reflector would have helped immensely but that is not what is used in those off the chart shots we see on the latest food rag. Serious food gets serious lighting and from what I understand a food set is good for 10 minutes max so there are chefs on the scene keeping the photographer primed in shoot worthy subject.

This was an outdoor shot. Wasn't even meant to be a "food" shot, but there was such nice food being served, I gave it a shot.

Hey there Crysalis ... I wasn't trying to devalue your effort or eye and many apologies in advance if you felt you were being compared side by side with seasoned pros!!! Just passing on what I learned about food.

No it's ok. I wanted harsh comments. Did best I could for environment I had. This was a 250+ person dinner where restaurants had a table setup with one of their nicest "dishes" as a sample and people just walked by and grabbed a sample. I went in to the event thinking it was just a "candid" kind of thing, but they wanted some food shots too, so I took a stab.
