Smile New Zealand Trip: 100-400 Hire in UK or NZ ?

We are off to NZ Mar/April for a month to visit my daughter.

I have a 70-200 2.8 IS but feel I may need the rerach of the 100-400 instead. Can't justify buying, so am thinking of hiring.

Any idea how much to hire in NZ? & can you recommend anyone?

Uk price to hire for 28 days approx £144

Any help much appreciated.

Heres a pretty good list of all the lens rental places I know of, and a few I didn't, and none of them list a 100-400.

What about just putting a 2x TC on your 70-200?
The only think I can see you needing the really long reach for would be birds, and most of the natives will let you get close enough to use the 70-200, and even that can be too long.

Buy one second hand and then flog it when you get back. Net cost ~£0.

I spent 3 weeks touring NZ in Nov/Dec 2007. In total I took over 2,000 photos and have slimmed that down to 366 taken with my DSLRs. The breakdown of those remaining images is....

10-22 = 173
17-55 = 54
100-400 = 139

Many of the 17-55 shots could have been handled by the 10-22 as there was focal length overlap and no special need for f/2.8 and/or IS.

Here is the focal length breakdown of keepers from my 100-400....

Yes - that may be a cheaper option ( I have a 1.4) . Thanks

Very useful info!

one of the reasons I was thinking of the 100-400 is I have a lot of overlap with the 24-105 and the 70-200.
I see most shots were at the 100 & then the 400 end. Any particular type of shots at the 400 end? or just general.
I was also thinking of getting a 16-35 for the landscape shots.

I also seem to be linked into someone else's gear list!
I have a 30D & a 5D

Why not just purchase an extender/teleconverter to get more reach from your existing lens?

I have a 24-105 - so quite a lot of overlap.

I already have a 1.4 teleconverter but want more reach that I can get.
