Default NEW SanDisk Extreme cards (60MB/sec)

I came across these while choosing which CF card/s I'll buy for my future EOS 7D.

Rated at 60MB/sec or 400x and only available in 8gb, 16gb and 32gb. Too bad they don't make them in 2gb or 4gb at least.

8gb:

16gb:

32gb:

Wow, technology pretty impressive! I think that I will wait a bit until prices drop and/or rebates are offered.

It says "UDMA" right there on the picture of the card.

Dunno, though. $180 for 16GB is rather pricey if you ask me. I got the 8GB Extreme IV for about $55 during the last rebate, the timing of which, in retrospect, makes a lot of sense now. GB / $ keeps rising, as do data transfer rates, so it doesn't make much sense to buy the cutting edge cards unless you can afford the premium. I'd much rather put that money into glass. $300 can put a nice dent in the cost of an L lens.

Too bad I can't take advantage of mail-in rebates!

That's why I'd buy them, it's only U$D 10 more than an Extreme IV for me! What I think is pricey is the reader... plus a FireWire 800 low-profile card for my computer. That is like U$D 110!

Do you really need those fast cards, considering the large internal camera buffer?

Why do you need a dedicated reader?

I just plug in my camera via the USB port. It's not as fast as FW800, but it's fast enough to download a full card in a few minutes.

Faster card = longer continuous shooting before the buffer fills. With the 7D's frame rate, I'm thinking these new cards could be quite useful--that is, if the 7D is able to write the data quickly enough.

2 GB or 4 GB cards at those speeds would be pretty much a waste of your money. The cameras that are fast enough to need the speed would fill a 2 GB card with fewer than 100 RAW shots, and the cameras which take small enough files to get a "useful" number of shots on those card sizes won't be appreciably faster with those than with, say, the Extreme III.

Well, yes. The 5D2, for instance, has a capacity of about 13-14 frames RAW, or about 3 sec. at max. burst rate. If you shoot RAW+JPEG, your buffer's about 2 sec. on that. The 1DsIII has a smaller buffer size, but a higher burst rate, so it needs them even more, and likewise the 7D. Camera buffers are only large if you're shooting JPEG. Speed improvements from the latest Extreme III cards to the latest Extreme IV and Ducati cards(all of which support UDMA) are around 10%; this amounts to another shot or two of buffer capacity.

A fast card, a fast hard drive and a fast card reader make a significant difference in download times, especially when you're dealing with large cards or multiple cards. There's also a potential of snagging either your camera or the USB cable and sending the camera crashing to the floor, especially if you're working in tight conditions (hotel rooms, for instance). The Rob Galbraith CF/SD database shows that the fastest readers are capable of at least 25% faster throughput than the cameras are. A good card reader will make full use of the card's speed.

Checking Rob Galbraith's CF/SD database for the 1Ds3 and 5DII, both of which use UDMA, SanDisk's faster Ducati and Extreme IV UDMA cards aren't markedly better performers than their latest Extreme III cards (within about 10%; an extra shot or two in RAW). The 7D would need a much faster data bus to do appreciably better; whether Canon has implemented this remains to be seen. I suspect that Extreme V cards will show some improvements over the others in the 7D, but I doubt the difference will be overwhelming for anyone who doesn't frequently fill the buffer. Your biggest boosts will be in downloading via card reader, or when still newer cameras come to market.

The time spent downloading from the camera is not that big a percentage of my total processing time that I need to spend good money on a FW800 reader. It is primarily the write performance that matters for the purpose of getting that shot. But I can understand that others may differ in their needs.

Something else to consider is that EOS Utility Works well to download the images from my camera--I don't have to keep track of what I have already downloaded...often I find myself transferring files but I haven't deleted them from the card. If I used a reader I would worry that I might miss some images, or I would download multiple copies of something I already transferred. But again that's just me.
