Default 1d mIII images not sharp and grainy

Hi all,

this sunday i made some sport shots of a fieldhockey game.
with iso's at 250 / 400 and shutters above /1200 i am wondering why my shots are not 100% sharp (look at full-size in flickr) and why they are so damn grainy for such iso's
doesnt seem right

Did you have to pull back exposure in post?

I agree with the above assumption. If you underexposed during the shoot, and then upped the exposure in PP, you'll get some level of visible noise. FWIW, I don't see anything wrong the first one. Do you have the histogram of the original RAWs?

So that looks like a full 1 stop exposure boost and lots of sharpening. Boosting the exposure adds noise and sharpening too much, sharpens the noise. Double whammy.

The OP does have some pretty high compression though on the Flickr images.

Quite the jpg artifacts.

These images look very professional. Are you a professional sport photographer?

but guys, you say i need to pump up my exposure for over a stop. but arent my settings wrong then?
i just had it on AV, the 1d should gimme good results right? weather was cloudy so a solid soft light source. (its was not dark, light clouds)

what do i need to do, if i used exposure bias it was almost always partial over exposed!
what kind of metering modes you guys use for this kind of sports?

An outdoor event like this one with consistent lighting? I'd be in Manual Mode.

One of the easiest ways to meter in Manual Mode can be found HERE

I have no idea. You mentioned "even lighting" so that's what made me suggest Manual Mode.

If you're in Av mode and you're switching between the white jerseys and the orange jerseys, you're going to get different exposures. The shots metered on the white jerseys are going to come out darker.

Another reason to shoot Manual exposure.

for my own education and development im curious why manual would be a good choice in consistent lighting? I don't shoot sports so use Av mode .
