Default 100mm Macro 2.8L

It's here. Got a call from my local shop - only one in and did I want it...

Will obviously take photos with it(!) but as it's vile outside...

@f2.8

@ f11

Both taken as jpeg, no sharpening only - resized for web. 40D used, tripod mounted. No pixel level crops yet - trying to get the house straight for visitors!

<edit to add a quick & dirty 1:1 crop - 5DII f2.8, sharpness 3 in DPP no other PP. What a dirty box...>

How's the IS? Is it worth it compared to the original 100? Someone else posted a review but of bokeh and nothing actually useful.

IS is brilliant - from just mucking around. I don't really have time to do any exhaustive testing (unfortunately) but IMO, it is definitely worth the £££. 3 position focus limiter Full/0.5m - infinity/0.3m-0.5m. AF works best using the limiter (inside, dim light, 40D) but is quick enough (again not exhaustive testing).

All the photos taken with it so far have been with AF - I don't anticipate any problems with it!

Good to see it's already becoming available and it looks a cracker. The only thing for me is that my 100mm macro seems excellent, so I can't see why I should spend double the amount for an improvement on that. I'm saving for the MP-E65mm instead.

Good luck with your new lens!

How is the AF speed on it compared to non-macro USM lenses?

IQ side, original 100mm Macro = the new 2.8L or 2.8L is better than the original one?

I don't care much about the IS, since I use tripod all the time. Just like to know if the new L really worth the double price.
