Default Failed S2 IS - stuck shutter

Last January my S2 IS failed because of a stuck shutter. I had wrote canon support who wouldn't offer to fix the camera under warranty.

Next, I tried to fix it myself but couldn't and the camera has been in hundreds of pieces in a zip lock bag sense.

I decided to email canon again today explaining my situation. I don't think I'm in luck as I have my camera in many pieces but here is what I got back.

1. If a PowerShot S2 IS is received by the Factory Service Center with
a problem description of no image, (either on the LCD or the memory
card) and it is determined this issue is caused by the shutter sticking,
Canon will provide a No Charge courtesy repair.

2. If the camera shows impact damage, evidence of abuse, alteration, or
mishandling, or is otherwise ineligible for coverage under the limited
warranty for the PowerShot S2 IS, the FSC will prepare and send a Repair
Estimate, which must be approved by the customer prior to repair.

.....buy a new camera. There's no way getting it fixed wouldn't cost a couple hundred.

Would you mind posting the actual email from Canon, with details of the person who sent you this email ?

This would be very useful for other folks as Canon support gives the runaround on this..

Call me crazy, but I have a suspicion that the "camera being in hundreds of pieces in a zip lock bag", just may be considered "alteration".

To the OP, if you've successfully reassembled it in the last 2 months, just send it in for an estimate. Canon told me on the phone an XSi repair would cost me $'s, but when I sent it in, they did it under warranty even though I had no warranty card. Messing around with e-mail for some sort of assurance ahead of time is a waste. If it's still in the zip log bag and you can't reassemble it, just buy a new camera.

Can we collect some proof that canon repaired the S2IS without a warranty ?
Perhaps someone could copy a scanned copy of the receipt showing the free repair or even the email - showing the tech support persons contact details. It would help people trying to get this problem fixed..

. . . have stuck shutter too.

Yes, could "cor" who posted Sept 2009 please give us more info regarding Canon's email response where they said that they will fix -- I was told today on phone by service tech in Chesapeak, VA that it will cost minimum $140 -- perhaps "cor" could give us the email contact person, or time, date and origin of the response he received?

It's odd that Canon would commit in writing (email) but not commit verbally or even say, after examining the camera, that under certain circumstances there is a possibility that they will do a courtesy repair.

And/or could "ct1co2" who posted 3 wks ago provide some info or documents showing that Canon fixed without warranty? After you sent camera, did they send you an email estimate for cost of repair in which they said they would repair as if under warrranty ?

I will be sending my S2 IS to Canon service tomorrow for estimate/repair. The above info could be persuasive if they will not agree to do courtesy repair.

thanks and hope to hear from you.
