Will soon be spending a couple of nights in Bangkok & HK.
Would like recommendations for places in each city for great photo ops. Will primarily use my 17 - 55 2.8 IS, and contemplating bringing the 100-400 L. DO you think the 400 will come in handy in those cities?

In Bangkok, Chatuchuk weekend markets, Vertigo bar (59th floor at the Banyan Tree Hotel) at sunset. Any of the Temples and Palaces near the river. The roadside food stalls anywhere. Kao San road at night. I would recommend a day trip by taxi to Kancnaburi. In one day, you can see the old (real) floating markets, Have and Elephant ride and see a Monkey show, See the Tigers at the Toger temple, Erawin falls and the Bridge on the River Kwai. I did this 3 weeks ago and it was Fantastic.
Also a trip to the old city at Ayuttayha is well worth it.

Thanks,
Have a day trip to Ayuttayha on agenda, as well as trip to the floating markets & several of the Temples & Palaces near the river. Good to know about the Vertigi Bar. Is that a good place for dinner, too? Can someone recommend a guide (who understands photo ops) for a day there? And restaurants for bkfst & dinner. Staying at Shangri-La hotel. And STILL debating with myself whether to take the 100 - 400 lens, or just use the 17 - 55?

Don't bother with the 100-400, expecially on a crop body. It's way too long for these places. I'd much rather take a travel tripod such as a Gitzo GT1541T. Agree on Ayuthaya as suggested above.

In Hong Kong the 100-400 could be useful if you find something (don't know the tops of buildings?) to shoot that's far away. However, in regular street stuff there are so many people all you'll get is just someone in your way most of the time.
Where to go? -Mongkok street market (watch out for pick pockets though) -Tai O village. It's houses build on stilts and makes for some interesting shots http://www.discoverhongkong.com/eng/...g-village.html -Shamshuipo. Electronics street and the Golden Computer centre (used to be where everyone got their "copies" of software) -The peak. Go there at night with your tripod and take some shots of the city and habour at night from above. -Ngong Ping 360. Cable car with a view and of course the big buddha. -Sampan fishing. You can hire one from various habours to go out. Shek O is where I went to get a boat (this is where you can use your long lens). You can even go at night and catch squid during the right time of the year. There are more things to do. Certainly can just explore (which might mean not carrying the 100-400). There are lots of ops for taking photos of the contrast between the old and dodgy and the ultra modern. You'll find new hotels and malls and office buildings nested in between old buildings that should be knocked down and rebuilt. If you have a macro might be good to take too for food photos
