Not the typical wedding. I was expecting the bowling shoes, but not the dress. The bride really looked great, very stylish.
![]() ![]() ![]() And one I am not sure about the processing of...the flash was gelled very red and I am not sure if I regret that or not. ![]() Incidentally, I've met her MUA before and really like her work. She really knows how to optimize makeup for photography.

Pretty wild. I'm just curious, when you're setting up for shots like this, do you need to direct the couple very much on posing or do you just set them in the environment, offer a little encouragement, and let them do what they do?

A couple like this deliberately does things out of the ordinary. I picked the location and encouraged their interaction with each other. Some are like that, but many require more specific ideas and posing.
The main directions I almost always give early in the day and reinforce later are that the bride (and groom, but especially bride) should not face me squarely unless specifically asked, should shift her weight more to one side/foot most of the time, should bend at least one of her arms or put one hand on her hip, and sometimes use her hands/body to physically interact with furniture/walls/etc. I often suggest lifting a leg or bending a knee. The irony of my work is that I almost always do either unusual or more traditional shoots, but what I really want to do most is nostalgic, moody or very dream-like work. I guess that's influenced by processing, but it's also influenced by posing, lighting and environment.

oh that is coool. i think the processing for the last one works with her attire. kinda reminds me of back to the future.

Adding my last thread onto this thread since it's from the same wedding -
I've still got a ways to go with this set (about 1/2 done now). Bride's suite: ![]() Groom's suite: ![]() French pizza (room service at the Paris resort). Good stuff, but probably way more expensive than it should be.

Man, I love these. Totally my "style" and what I strive to be like. I'm doing my first wedding in November for some friends so thanks for a few ideas! Crossing my fingers I can shoot even close to you talent. Thanks for sharing and inspiring! Awesome.

I am a big fan of the first 3. It must be exciting to shoot a wedding at a place with such interesting and funky backgrounds. 2 questions:
1) Can you post some more photos (if you have any) with the background in #2? Preferably tighter shots since I think that might look pretty cool. 2) Did you try to shoot a silhouette shot with the background in #3?

Unfortunately I only have wider shots with that background because I only have one 5D and I wasn't swapping lenses at the time (35L was used). The 85L is too long on the 40D, and this really limits me sometimes. The closest shot I got was this:
![]() I did shoot several silhouettes including #3, some with the subjects in the frame and some without. I have noticed recently that I like ISO3200 better on my 5D than on my 40D. It can be pushed farther.

IMHO this is a more interesting well composed shot than #2. The texture of the wall also looks great zoomed in.

The first three are very nicely done Joey. I should take a few tips from some of those poses. They are different and really stand out from the run of the mill wedding shots. The first looks like a still from that old show "Hee Haw." The 4th is fair to midlin'.
Judging from these you have solid work and should be charging more. In the other thread you were looking for a pitch that would set you apart from the lowballing bottom feeders in your area. I think you discovered it in your post: "Moody and nostalgic." Sieze on that Joey and I think you can get something rolling that will garner you more higher tiered business. - Stu Last edited by sapearl : 13th of October 2009 (Tue) at 19:22. |
