Thanks, idsurfer, my wife told me about the single Iris that was out in the back yard. She tried to take some shots with the A620, and wasn't getting the results she wanted. So, she asked me to try it. I used the G11 with the 430EX II attached via the Canon off-camera cord so I could easily shoot in high-sync mode, as well as Tv mode to crank up the shutter speed. I shot several photos at various angles with the camera and the flash, and this one ended up as the best candidate. The EXIF was ISO 80, f/3.5, and 1/2000 sec.

I then processed the RAW file (shot RAW + JPEG) in Lightroom 3 (or DPP, can't remember now) to get the desired result, as well as cropped to preference. She wants to get a large print to hang somewhere in the house.

Here's the unprocessed JPEG;

And, here's my wife's first try with the A620. Notice she stuck a gray/black backdrop behind it to help in making the background darker.

Again Dennis, I will say that is an incredibly lovely shot! My question is this...did your G 11 actually let you shoot at 1/2000 in Tv mode with the flash? I was trying to get some interesting shots the other day (I'll keep them a secret and hold out until I get one) with the G 11 set to 1/2000 and the 430ex II set to high sync. I noticed that most of the time I was actually only achieving 1/640 sec shutter speed and sometimes 1/800. It would vary a bit with the occasional 1/2000. I thought something was wrong with the camera so I took the 430 off and tried again. It let me, without fail, shoot at 1/2000 every single time in Tv mode regardless of the exposure. I called tech support and they told me that the speedlite was causing the camera to hold back every once and a while. So, are you able to shoot at that speed with the 430 attached every time?

If you click on the JPEG image at the top of the page it will take you to the Flickr image, then click Actions and then on the EXIF link. It will display the EXIF, and show the 1/2000 sec. Yes, if I use the off-shoe cord, set the G11 to high-speed sync, and the 430EX II to high-speed sync (button on back), the I control the shutter speed in Tv. It's supposed to also work with my ST-E2 wireless unit, also setting it to high-speed sync, but I haven't mastered it yet. I prefer the corded method for this.

Here's another I took last year at 1/2000 sec.

I use the high shutter speed to darken the background and surrounding area. I like the effect.

Edit: I just did a quick check of this capability, and took a trial shot with Auto ISO at 1/2000 sec. and it fired at that shutter speed, and ISO 500. I set ISO 80 and did it again, and it fired at 1/2000, but poor exposure. Then I set shutter speed to 1/4000 and it took a 1/4000 speed shot. The exposure was not correct, but I was just checking the capability. Here's a shot at 1/4000, just a quick grab, Auto ISO was 500. This was only shot in JPEG, with white balance to Flash.

Here are a couple from today's mountain bike ride. Able to finally get up into the wooded area for some riding! It seems as if I've been wrapped up in the "little world" for quite a while now with my photos. It has either been this or shots of my family.

I thought this one was so nice I just made it my avatar!!!!

I shot it once with the G12, it was just okay. Here is a link to the best G shot of the moon I've seen.

Agree

I might try as well.

The only exception is with my macro and I have used the digital zoom very successfully with close-up lenses to around 1:1 magnification. Remember the 20x digital zoom will take the camera out to 560mm (in 35mm speak) – here is one example I posted previously, thankfully it is not an action shot, even though it is moving quite quickly!!! I am sure I did a spreadsheet of the impact of digital zoom on focal length, plus converter factors, I will have to dig it out tonight, it may be of interest?

Whole thing mounted on a heavy tripod, image taken while there was still light in the sky...

Shot this today. Looks like rain and thunderstorms tonight and tomorrow, so this is probably the peak for these flowers.

Well, I have been too immersed in macro lately. I'm trying to reform... The above Poppies were a chance opportunity today, so I grabbed a bunch of shots. I'm finding I have to shot RAW to get the best results, so I shoot RAW + JPEG. If the JPEGs are okay, then I can share them with friends and family quickly. The JPEGs on these were pretty good, but the RAW allowed me to adjust them to the desired results, as usual.

ZhengF2...Love the photo of Melbourne...Beautiful!

Dennis, I know what it is like to get sucked into the "little world". It is addicting. We need to remember this is only one aspect (albeit very cool) of this hobby.

Your poppies inspired me. Here is one from the wildflowers out back. I'm kinda a junkie for the flower shot.

idsurfer, I like the very limited focused areas, and the dreamy out of focus in the rest of the photo, including the central part of the flower. It really makes the flower stand out, and kind of draws you into the center of the flower. Very nice.

Here is a great bridge that crosses the N. Fork of the Payette river. I have always wanted to stop and photograph it. I didn't do it justice, but the family was in the car waiting. Hot springs bound! But not before a little surf up stream in Cascade.
