Please help me choose a P&S

In the $200-300 range. must be compact, for my wife to take everywhere with her. She's a point and shoot person, no manual settings needed. the things it must have is excellent picture quality, good quality video, ease of use and pretty durable.

Dont really know what canon has in this area these days.

perhaps consider the new SX120? I have the SX110 - simple and good quality.

Read some of the reviews on the Canon 780IS on this forum, Resellerratings.com, Amazon and other places:

A friend of mine bought one of these this summer. They're virtually bullet-proof: not plastic in other words. The video quality is excellent for such a small camera. It has really cool features if you choose to look into them and use them but the build quality on this thing is really something. Highly recommended.

Canon even has a case for it and the camera comes in various colours like most of the p&s.

thanks guys, I have to say that the SD line seems to be what she'd want/need. they also fit more into the price range.

avbcon - my personal blog has quite a few. Virtually every shot in the October & September archives are with this camera (I think the ones that aren't are marked anyway). HTH

I own an sx110 is and have been happy with it. It's just a little bulky though. If she's going to throw it in a purse, or carry it in a pocket, this might be the best of all worlds.

Seems very compact, and is stylish, and the video it shoots is HD (720). The price is squarely in your range as well. No personal experience, but having two canon digicams (s90 as well) I don't think you will go wrong. Panasonic has some nice units that also shoot HD video and I've had 3 of those and always been happy with the photo quality.

Which movie format do you folks like better .AVI or .MOV? what do you find more compatible with converting to dvd and why?

avi I like better because it plays on more stuff without an issue. not a major issue regardless

not an issue for you or I maybe but my wife is not tech savy so whatever makes it easier on her, the better.

avi for sure then. You can burn them to a dvd and many (especially the cheap ones) will read avi files as is. I'm not sure of any that do that with mov files. either format probably is the same when transfering to dvd format...but again, avi is more recognized if you are a windows person...and it's recognized fine in MAC OS as well.

Thats kinda what im thinking... hmm. I need to have her be able to use this thing without asking me how every time.
