I spent some time last evening doing AF Microadjustments on my various lens and TC combos with the 7D. Having done that, I wanted to get out this morning and try it out. I had hoped for some ducks and/or geese but all that was available in the air were gulls.
I was using the 7D with my 300 f/2.8L IS and 1.4xTC combo for all shots, hand held. The combo locked AF quickly and accurately. There are 3 different flight sequences that follow. The first is a head-on inbound flight sequence of 3 shots. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Geez Harvey,
I'm totally unqualified to judge BIF shots or camera/lens combos in this league, but I just gotta say.... DAYUMMMM! The focus, DOF, and exposure on all these shots looks fabulous to me. I see you're shooting in manual mode so this is obviously your fault at least in part. Sure seems to me you've got that new machine under control my friend. Now go find us an Osprey or somethin'. Kenn

Looking good, there was some guy over on DP that returned his 7D as he was unhappy with it's one shot AF capabilities for urban shooting!!!!!

Very nice!
You are phenomenal at tracking those birds. Handheld ? I am getting more practice these days, hopefully one day I'll be able to track somewhat better, leave alone like you. I would appreciate any tips though! Also, how did you micro adjust the AF ? If you can, I would appreciate the process you used. A general outline would suffice. I find that if I use Spot AF while I am micro adjusting, the numbers don't work well for non-Spot AF. So I redid my adjustments using regular single pt AF. What AF pattern did you use for your micro adjust ? |

Nice shots as always Harvey...
Although judging from your 7D/500 post - those looked fine as well and I take it you had not microadjusted that lens at the time. I have not found the need to adjust my lenses but out of curiousity what method/distance did you choose to use to do the adjustments? |

Here's another one asking for the microadjustment info -- I am DEFINITELY going to have to adjust for the 100-400. The 70-200 and 17-55 are fine, the 100-400 is not on the 7D.

They all look alike. What I took away from this series is, the bird in the last five shots has a peg leg and is named Pete.

He says he is using the 1.4x on a 300/2.8. That would make the effective wide open f4 which is below the 5.6 limit of the 7D. There should be no need to tape the pins unless the effective max F # is 8.
