Is the Canon 550ex and the Canon 550ex-ETTL both the same flashes? If not, can either one be used as a master to trip/flash a Canon 420ex flash? Thanks in advance. Steve.

yes, the ettl is a just a descriptor, not the name of the flash. And yes, it can master a 420ex.
