Default nite sports and ghosting

I recently shoot soccer under the lights using my new Manfrotto 322B to eliminate some of the red eye (but that's another post). Some of the shots exhibited ghosting and my understanding is that this is due to shooting too close to ambient? How many stops below do you need to be to guarantee no ghosting? I'm pretty sure I was hovering around -2 to -3. Should I just make sure I'm at least 3 to 4 stops below and stay within range of my 580EX?

Without some means to measure the light it's just trial and error. It should only take a couple of shots to figure it out though. From my own experience; The lighting changes pretty dramatically on different parts of the field so you may need to change settings as you move about.

Thanks, that's true, the light does change from the 50 yard line to the end zone. I was thinking that I could use the exposure meter in the camera, keeping it pegged at the -2 mark.

Take a shot without flash. There should be barely anything visible. Now turn on the flash.
