I just bought a 5Dmk2. I have the classic 5D but not sure how much better the MK2 is .
Also, any suggestions for settings on the MK2 for weddings. Thanks, rollsman |

Aren't you supposed to ask for advice before you buy what it is you're asking about?
Really though... that camera sucks big time and will give you nothing bur problems. Give me 50 bucks and I'll take it off your hands. I'll even throw in a 50D just so I can sleep at night. |

pro....i have both... the xtra magarpixalz is great when you want to crop in.
con....you need a bad ass cpu to deal with it all...(i switch to sraw for BS parts of the day) pro....the fact that you DONT have to WAIT 5 seconds to chimp a shot is worth gold. pro, the 6400iso is a dream if you really need it. con....maybe... center point might be a touch better than the old. 40D owns it! |

Yervant, Jeff Ascough, Bobby, and many many top wedding photographers use the 5D2, and these are guys that can buy any cameras they want. If they put the 7D focus system into the 5D3 it'll be a killer body, and may make even me go full frame.

I thought I saw Yervant using 1Ds series cameras.

At the workshop a couple of weeks ago he was singing the praises of the 5DII, and used it exclusively. He also has 1 series cameras. He seemed interested in the 1D4 camera that a guy from Canon bought in.

Definitely consider using sRAW. I use the sRAW1 setting almost all the time for weddings and portrait sessions. For times where there is chance of an enlargement I sometimes switch to full RAW.
Even a fully loaded computer will be working really hard to keep up with the larger file sizes of full RAW images from a 5D MkII, not to mention all the extra HD space they take up. So make sure you use this sparingly unless you have a lot of horsepower under your computer chassis For me the UI was a huge upgrade over the 5D MkI. I would recommend making a custom tab with all your frequent settings. Very helpful. The new batteries are really nice too. Right now I just looked at my camera and and my shot count is 1441 with 33% capacity left. There are lots of other small advantages but the big ones are obviously low light and HD video capability. The focusing is still pretty much the same, but a little more responsive and accurate in my experience. You do have the ability to do microadjustments though, which can be very helpful. Hope you enjoy it! |

I keep hearing bad things about the 5d2's focusing. I know it is not as good as the 1d series, and not as good as teh 7d, but is it better than the 40d or worse?

The 40D is SIGNIFICANTLY better with AF. Having said that, the 5DII is entirely adequate. Hope those two statements make sense together

The 7D is another big step up from the 40D. The 1D4 seems to have much the same new AF system as the 7D, I had a chance to try it and it works well.

I don't know what else I can tell you. I used a 1D4, it was hefty, focused quickly in dark areas without af assist, and made nice high iso images. I found it easy to control, much like a 7D, much easier than the 1DIIs I tried a few years ago. It just worked.
If you want a full review check out this.

i just shot a wedding with both last week - mark ii was perfect at the ceremony with iso 3200 - much cleaner shots than I would have gotten with the 5d classic.. the 5d classic still holds its place in my bag, i love that camera... looking to pick up a second mark ii though..
