All, I just got a canon L 100-400 lens from BH. I took about 100 pictures with it the other day and I got a handfull of instances where the focus/shutter would lock up and I would get a error message on myT1i. It said something about a communication error try cleaning the contacts and try again. The camera is a few months old and the lens is brand new. I would turn the camera off and it would work again. Any thoughts?

steve

Sounds like dirty connections :) Did you try cleaning them with alcohol. You can use regular lens cleaner wraps too.

I actually did not try to clean them thinking everything was new and factory clean. I still think that dirty is a stretch. Is this a common error?

Call B&H and simply return it and exchange it for another. A new lens should not have dirty contact points, but check your camera's contacts. A simple pencil eraser should clean them. But if other lenses work with the body, it's the 100-400. If it's within 15 days and you have all the papers and wrappings, there will be no questions asked. That's the advantage of dealing with them.

All metals that aren't 100% gold oxidize.. Even a newly bought lens' contacts could be slightly dirty.
use a soft pencil eraser on the lens contacts and then try again. If it still errors; then I agree to send it back.
My 50 1.4 doesn't get used as much as the 10-22 and my 16-55; so I get this occasionally.
